Composer/conductor/jazz historian/author/horn player/record producer/educational administrator Gunther Schuller (1925-2015) was an important mentor and major musical influence on Nancy: she performed under his baton while a student at New England Conservatory of Music, and at the Tanglewood Music Center. He was also her long-time employer: she worked part-time for his publishing company Margun Music from 1983-1992. Two Marimolin CDs he produced, as well Nancy's first solo CD, were released on his record label GM Recordings. He composed "Phantasmata" (1990) for Marimolin, and dedicated a marimba solo to Nancy, "Marimbology" (1993). This was taken at a talk during ZMF 2009.
